Running Log/Track Work
Distance: 4:17 milesTime: 50:19
Comments: I've kept to the plan this week. Core work on Tuesay, off Wednesday and back at Corona del Sol tonight for another bout of speed/strength. I've been pretty sore the past few days but nothing in the hip like before.
In fact, I caught myself wincing out of reflex when I started the warmup mile and was kind of shocked to have not the slightest bit of resistance or discomfort as I pushed through the stride.
Last week's effort was sort of all over the place timewise so I wanted to have a much more consistent effort. I also wanted to put in eight of the sets if at all possible. I managed the former but decided to hold off on the latter.

Training Conference
After battling the hip pain for at least six weeks I finally just decided to throw in the towel. It didn't make any sense at all to keep pounding away at this, enduring this much pain for no real goal whatsoever. As a result I didn't run at all for three weeks and let myself recover from whatever the hell I had messed up. To compensate somewhat, I hauled out the thrice damned roman chair a week ago and started hitting it every other day.
I talked with Coach Dean this morning and we decided to just go back to speed strength and start pretty much from scratch. Hopefully, since I just took three weeks off instead of the usual three months, it won't be completely from scratch.
Goalwise we have decided on the Portland Marathon scheduled for October 10. The idea being this. For the next six to eight weeks I'll work exclusively on building strength (at the expense of any sort of distance at all) and, after that, we'll have a sense of where I am physically. That will put us at the end of March. read more

Running Log/Recovery Run
Distance: 4 milesTime: 35:39
Comments: It has been a catastrophic week and the chaos enveloped me all yesterday and precluded my scheduled track workout. I got out and did the scheduled effort this afternoon but it was as rough as a quality workout.
The temperatures were scorching and I don't know if the extra day off left me lethargic or the fact that I haven't run in this hot conditions in a while. Either way, the core exercises were tough and the four mile run was downright brutal.
Think of the sensation you get when you forget and open the oven while leaning over it. Take that blast of hot air and now think of running in it for, say, half an hour or so. I was happy to get done with a sub-9 min/mi pace.

Running Log/Goal Pace Run
Distance: 6 miles
Time: 43:35
Garmin link
Comments: After the brutal agony of last night's adventure in speed I really didn't feel like putting this one in. But the lure of the new toy finally was a deciding factor and I got on out there. The plan was just six miles at goal pace which, according to the guys is actually 7:27 per mile, not the 7:20 I've been working with. But why fix what ain't broke?
Overall I felt pretty good the whole way and it's certainly obvious I'm a hell of a lot stronger than I was last time I tried to do this. And the info from the heart-rate monitor certainly bears that out. read moretuesday, october 21, 2008
Powerline Roman Chair
So my sister, who clearly hates me and intends on collecting my portion of the inheritance, ponied up and ordered a Powerline Roman Chair via Sams Club.
Now I had an experience with this ugly beast of exercise equipment earlier this year and didn't enjoy it one bit. Still, I had a noticeable increase in mid-body strength that I can't underestimate.
So my sister - who also is interested in this approach to strength training - offered to pick up the damned thing with the understanding it will go live with her when I'm out of the country.
For now I'm keeping it chained in the garage and undergoing it's evil machinations intermittently as I get into this key month of training. It's not something I'm looking forward to.monday, february 25, 2008
Supplemental Training
A few weeks ago, after confering with both my coach and my chiropractor I decided to implement some core training into my marathon preparation efforts.
This is not intended to make me faster, or more powerful or give me washboard abs or any of that happy horsesh*t. It's an effort to forestall injury, plain and simple.
The logic here is this, my psoas has been a continual problem as has the alignment of my hips. By increasing the strength in the muscles that support these particular muscles they won't have to do double duty under the stress I intend to put them through. My chiropractor was kind enough to lend me her Roman Chair for a few weeks to get started on these workouts. I say "kind" but I want you to know I've come up with a fantastic array of epithets to describe this little device. read more

Running Log
Distance: 5 miles
Time: 42:53
Comments: Felt like warmed over dog poop yesterday and this morning was not much better.
Yesterday I got on the roman chair my chiropractor lent me and finally got a somewhat decent series of exercises in. The result is my upper body is seriously sore today.
So while every step jarred my chest painfully my legs felt pretty solid the whole way. I also feel a bit dehydrated today as well. Something that I need to address or the long run tommorrow will be rather unpleasant.
The mile splits worked out to 8:11, 8:32, 9:08, 8:46 and 8:14. Yah, about right for an easy run at this point.
