Piura – There is harshness to Peru; from the bite of the high peaks in the Andes to the searing heat of the deserts in the south. Across the country there are wide areas that present difficult obstacles but there are also areas of great bounty as well. The river valleys cut through the coastal deserts bringing lush abundance and a diversity of agriculture almost unequaled. Perhaps the world’s most ubiquitous crop, potatoes, was first cultivated here. A stop at a vendor’s stall in any large market will provide a window on the overlooked treasures this country can produce from the earth.
