Choco
– At
Choco, the road up the mountain finally breaks across the ridge and reveals
the ranges beyond. It's the beginning of the true Andes and life here
is hard. And even in the middle of summer the nights are brutally cold.
The men drink unfiltered sugar cane whiskey at night to fend off the cold
and look at the chill of the morning with bleary red eyes. The women walk
through town quietly spinning thread for new blankets needed to ward off
the cold and rain. |
