Arequipa
– The cities of Peru are still fed by the produce from the nearby fields and, very often, these fields are tended by hand. Outside of Arequipa, for example, are hundreds of kilometers of agriculture needed to keep the city feed. Here a group of Indian women clean an onion field that has recently been harvested. Tractors are a rarity and beasts of burden are used only for the largest tasks. The work is dusty, difficult and slow - much as it has been for the past several hundred years. |
