Vizchachani
– The road from Ariquipa to Chivay leads around El Misti to the high pampas beyond. This area is home to several members of the Camelid family for which Peru is famous. Most common are llamas and alpacas which are herded by local Indians. More difficult to spot are the wild Vicunas whose fur in harvested by local tribes who gather together by dozens to round up the timid animals. The high quality of the wool - along with the scarcity of the animal and difficulty to capture them - makes items made from it extremely expensive and valuable. |
