Lima
– As much as 90 percent of Peru is Roman Catholic and religious feast days are national celebrations. Processions, festivals and elaborate masses are the hallmarks of these events and none are more important than Semaņa Santa - the holy week leading up to Easter. While the more elaborate celebrations now occur in more rural areas, Lima is still a place for the devout to celebrate. This depiction of the life of Jesus in mime was held just off the Plaza de Armas on Holy Thursday. The next day it was not uncommon to see live and disturbingly realistic passion plays across the city. |
