El Misti
– The almost perfect conical shape of El Misti towers over the City of Arequipa in Southern Peru. The volcano is very much active having seen five minor eruptions in the past century. From its interior crater waft the steam from volcanic fumaroles that give assurance of more in the future. The top of the mountain, more than 5,800 meters high, is located at the cusp of the outer crater where a rusted but sturdy iron cross has been erected.
