El Misti
– The city of Arequipa is surrounded by a trio of volcanos that dominate the western skyline. From halfway up El Misti you can see the peaks of nearby Pichu Pichu that reach 5,571 meters high. It is the smallest of the three mountains but just as laden with myth and legend. Mummies have been found on the high slopes and supposedly, if you look just right, you can see the figure of a sleeping Indian in the sillhouette of the mountain. I never was able to see him but I never doubted he was there. |
