Lima
– Lima is called the City of Kings and the Plaza de Armas is designed to convey the impression. This was once the center of the Spanish world in South America and the regal manner of the place still survives today. Due to the relative instability of the geography, the central cathedral is relatively new, being constructed after the great earthquake in 1746. Government buildings surround the cobblestone streets but none are original. The bronze fountain in the center of the square is the oldest inhabitant of the plaza, being erected in 1650. |
