Chiclayo – Jose Abelardo Quiñones Gonzalez is one of Peru’s most venerated heroes. The aviator was a Peruvian celebrity in the late 1930, particularly for his penchant for inverted flights. He was mortally wounded during the battle of Zumilla during the war with Ecuador in 1941. He finished his final flight with a frontal assault on an Ecuadoran artillery emplacement. Since he was stationed at the air base near Chiclayo in northern Peru for much of his military service, that city takes particular pride in his memory.
