Lima
– Almost
70,000 Peruvians died during the two-decade war between a hard line group
of communist terrorists and the military. The vast majority of these deaths
were innocent residents who got caught in the middle of the struggle.
A commission issued a list of recommendations for the government to take
for reparations but almost all have been ignored. On occasions, there
are protest marches like this one where people carry oversized copies
of identification cards to remember their family members and demand the
government take action. Most simply want to know where the remains of
their family members are but only a handful of more than 4,600 clandestine
gravesites in the highlands have been investigated. |
