Lima
– The
Plaza de San Martin near the heart of Central Lima is named for Jose de
San Martin, who marched an army from Argentina across the Andes to defeat
the Spanish and liberate Peru. The plaza, anchored by the venerable Gran
Hotel Bolivar, looks dazzling at night. During the day, the local is much
tattered and exhausted. The hotel is falling further into disrepair each
year and it is flanked by a beautiful old theater that now has a bricked
in lobby to provide privacy for the patrons who come here to view pornographic
films. |
