Tuman – Times are tough in Tuman. Every one of the Northern Peruvaian city's 32,000 residents relies for their livelihood on the three-century-old sugar cane factory and the fields that supply it. In the Department of Lambayeque, where Tuman is located, sugar production fell by 40 percent in the first six months of 2004 to 20,000 metric tons. Workers have fled to look for better pay, business debts have mounted, and the ability to find alternative sources of water has been limited.
