than $1.5 million was spent to refurbish Chiclayo’s half-century
old Elías Aguirre Stadium in preparations for the 2004 Copa America
tournament. The two year effort was completed hours before the first game
started and workers were still putting finishing touches on the venue
as fans began arriving.Unlike state-of-the art football fields in the
United States , the greens keeping is done with a push mower and a steady
hand. Since the field is naturally grown, the level of care has to be
excellent. There is no hiding the problems under a layer of ready made
