Peru Stories

I support myself as a freelance journalist in Peru and in the past ten years I have worked at newspapers across the United States. Here is a sampling of some of my reporting.

Peru's rebel leader unrepentant at his trial - Abimael Guzman, the 69-year-old founder of the Maoist Shining Path guerrilla movement, brought his first public trial to a halt with a defiant protest for television cameras. The brutal insurgency that he led paralyzed Peru for more than two decades and cost almost 70,000 lives. - The San Francisco Chronicle

Terror accomplice's case stirs Peru - Lori Berenson was arrested, tried and imprisoned in Peru nine years ago for terrorism. She insists she is innocent but Peruvian authorities say she is not. Her legal battle for freedom may put the country's efforts against terrorism at risk. - The Washington Times

The price of protest - As Peru was in the middle of hosting the continent-wide soccer tournament, The Copa America, workers unions called a nation wide strike. Although the strike and protests were minor, the event highlighted the difficuly Peru is having moving past such problems. - The Northern Report

Life on the Beach - Colan is a beach where Peruvians go for recreation, tourists are a rarity. But an enterprising couple from Oxnard, Calif. have opened a little bungalow hotel at the end of this little slice of paradise to spend working half of every year. - The Northern Report

Ruling undone; pain stands - For two decades Marianne Connelly has felt the loss of her murdered daughter. She now must face it all again as the man twice convicted of the killing is given another chance by the legal system. - The Press-Enterprise.

Retirement bomb - Due to new pension packages and demographics, thousands of public employees in California are on the cusp of retirement. Agencies across the state are scrambling to keep experienced personnel, maintain staffing levels and afford the growing costs. - The Press-Enterprise
